Domain Names

Domain Names provide common names or phrases for us that help represent the numeric IP addresses that are associated with them when they are searched in the global Domain Name System. The translating of numeric addresses to alphabetical ones allows Internet users to localize, visit web sites, send e-mail and communicate other computers that have different IP addresses or domain names.

Each string of letters, digits and hyphens between the dots is called a label in the parlance of the domain name system (DNS). Valid labels are subject to certain rules, which have relaxed over the course of time. Originally labels must start with a letter, and end with a letter or digit; any intervening characters may be letters, digits, or hyphens.

Every domain name ends in what we refer to as a top-level domain (TLD) name, which is either one of a small list of generic names (three or more characters), or a two characters territory codes. Examples of TLDs are .biz .com .gov .info .net .org and many more.

The DNS or domain name system makes it possible to attach hard-to-remember IP addresses (such as 142.131.206) to easy to remember domain names (such as "HostPit.com") that we can take advantage of when we exchange URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) and e-mail addresses to one another. A less recognized advantage is that the domain name system makes it possible for us to assign authoritative names to our sites without the need of communicating with a central registrar each time.

As a general rule, an IP address and the server name are interchangeable but for most Internet services, the server will not have any way to know which one was used. However, the explosion of Internet has resulted in far more web sites than servers. To accommodate this phenomenon, the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) specifies that the client determine the server which name is being used with. This way, one server with one IP address can provide different sites for different domain names. This feature goes under the name virtual hosting and is commonly used by most common web hosts.

For example, our server at 192.0.34.166 is handling the following sites (with different domains):HostPit.com, PictouCounty.net, CanadianGIS.com, and many more.

Naming a web site after its domain name is important, because when people think of your web site, they will think of it by the title that you use. If your name is also your URL (domain name), then they will automatically know where to find it next time. For example, when people think of Maritime Web Design, they don't have to wonder what URL to type into their browser to get there because the name of the site also happens to be the URL.

Domain name registration is one of the most important things you can do for your business. Even if you're not ready to have a web site yet, you can still leave your domain name "parked" on our servers for as long as you want. We can work with any existing domain names that you may have already registered or register a new one for you.

Think about it... if someone else registers your domain name, you could lose all of your potential customers that are trying to find your web site! It is estimated that over 50 MILLION domain names will be registered this year - Grab yours now before it's gone! More than 90% of words in the Webster dictionary have been registered and almost all sensible 3 & 4 letter domain names are no longer available
